Who we are:
Jagdgeschwader 5 (JG5) is an online squadron whose origins go back to September 1999. Pilots have come and gone but the squadron lives on and the core aims and purpose have changed little.
JG5 aims to provide an immersive, rewarding and challenging experience as being part of a squad of pilots flying combat missions and working closely to stay alive in a WWII environment.
The aim is for realism and historical accuracy wherever possible and to help achieve this for others within the online community.
But above all, its to have fun and make new friends who share a common interest in flight sims and aviation in general.
Rules and guidelines
Whilst we are here to have fun, experience has shown there is a need to make sure all members understand exactly what we are looking to achieve and how we consider it best to do so. So here are the squad ‘rules and regulations’:
Membership
- Daft/offensive names whilst being laughed at will not be permitted!
- Discussion on forums (where the JG5 tag is used) and in-game chat is to be polite and respectful (remember you represent the squad).
- Membership of more than one squad is not permitted.
Many members have limited time and it is important that members dedicate as much of their on-line flight time that coincides with other squad member’s availability to each other.
Similarly, multiple squad membership can lead to conflicts of interest and flight time for co-ops.
- Co-ops such as FNBN will need to be attended as part of the Dead is Dead pilot career.
This is where the core aims of JG5 can be enjoyed to the greatest extent and the most realism achieved.
Please read the brief and understand key objectives and ground movements, the flight leader will however be responsible for the actual squad role in the coop.
- New members will need to undergo a number of probationary flights to see if there is mutual agreement between JG5 and the applicant as to what they hope to gain from squad flying.
They will also need be in agreement with the rules/guidelines outlined here and below (and listed separately for ‘Dead is Dead’ in depth) before wearing squad tags.
Basic Squad Flight
- Planes are to be flown with maximum realism: no tech tips (if possible), icons, etc. are permitted, and realistic cockpit views are strongly suggested.
This is part of the fun and challenge of JG5 and any pilots not used to these settings will be given full support to 'find the light'
- Good online combat etiquette at all times: No kill stealing is allowed, whether within the squad or external.
If an aircraft is black smoking it is to be considered off limits, unless:
a) the squad member who caused the damage indicates it to be finished off, or
b) if the target is still a threat to allied aircraft (this will be checked upon replay if necessary), or
c) a bomber/attack aircraft is still on route to target and therefore a threat
Similarly, no ‘vulching’ or spawn camping, and enemy airfields are only to be deliberately approached for specific objectives.
- ‘Hair down’ missions can be flown by squad members together where DiD does not apply, and any plane may be flown, for any side, in any fashion.
However, it makes sense to maintain some form of discipline and to fight as if on an ‘Official’ squad flight.
If flying ‘lone wolf’, similarly do as you wish but respect other pilots and avoid vulching etc. as this can bring a reputation to the squadron tags.
- During flights (official or not) things may get tense, but there is to be no name calling, aggressive blame games or petty finger pointing.
‘Official’ Squad flight
- The Primary objective is to support fellow members at all times and for all members to return to base:
- ‘Dead is Dead’ rules apply on official sorties; kills and sorties are tracked for such designated flights; upon pilot death stats are reset to zero.
- (Loose) Formation flying is required to enable efficient spotting cover squad members and enable a leader to focus on navigation/targets/objectives
- Comms (using Teamspeak) should be set up as ‘push to talk’.
When two rottes are flying the default comms channel should be set to be within the pilot’s own rotte only, and then a whisper channel allocated to communicate to the whole flight.
The flight leader will set up their comms as they see fit (they will have multiple channels to juggle during a co-op and part of their role is to ensure coms work well).
- Custom aircraft skins are to be historical in nature (including the Hakenkreuz), but there is no need for 100% accuracy on a specific sourced aircraft, simply a good nod to actual historical designs is all that is required.
- Sortie objectives will be historical in nature, along the lines of:
a) Fighter sweep
b) Jabo runs
c) Bomber / ZG escort
- Targets are to be engaged by a measure of threat to the flight or objectives.
i.e. the squad is not to engage in a dogfight at 100mtrs with a single fighter simply to get a kill.
- Combat tactics are to revolve around ‘Loose Deuce’/one in one out, Trailing attacks, ‘Sandwich’ and ‘Spiral climb’ methods and individually the efficient management of energy.
Attackers should be covered at all times, ideally with two rottes operating together.
Individuals should not engage in ‘dogfight’ duels which mean their wingman cannot cover them.
The core value is to watch each other and put survival (of all) over kills.
- During a sortie the leader’s decisions are final and are not to be challenged unless discussion is requested/offered by the leader.
Feedback and opinion may be given after a sortie in debriefing in a constructive fashion.
Obviously a need for communicating some factors such as fuel levels, positions of contacts, navigational information is encouraged to assist the leader, but ultimately it is the leaders call.
- Planes flown for Dead is Dead pilot career flights are any that are historically applicable to JG5 (or the nearest version), to include:
Bf 109, E, F, G
Fw 190 A, F
(Z JG5 Bf110)
